May 13, 2013 Draper UT – GRW High Precision Bearings, one of the world’s largest manufacturer of high-precision miniature ball bearings has expanded production of a special ball bearing that specifically meets the exacting demands of anemometers and gas flow meters. Using a patented manufacturing procedure, GRW has developed a special ball bearing with a new retainer that stands up to the extremely low torque requirements of meters used for measuring the flow rate of liquids and gases or anemometers for measuring wind velocities. GRW’s specialty bearings for gas and anemometers now make the smallest rates of flow or slightest winds measurable, dramatically improving performance for manufacturers seeking the lowest starting torque and low flow measurements.
Conquering extreme low friction and flow demands of gas meters and anemometers.
Devices such as anemometers have long presented the greatest challenges to ball bearing technology. High friction, torque and lubrication take a heavy toll on the service life of ball bearings. Not only must bearings stand up to periods of peak performance but must offer extremely low startup torque so that accuracy of measurement is maintained, especially in the case of minimal media flow. Furthermore, micro-movements can cause randomly measured value extremes that distort the findings and preclude an exact determination of the flow rate. As a result, a ball bearing used in these devices must exhibit consistent dynamic behavior as it slows down once the media has stopped flowing or the wind has subsided.
GRW’s patented specialty ball bearings meet these extreme requirements for anemometers, including the reproducible starting torque, minimal dynamic frictional torque and long-term stability. GRW’s bearing design prohibits any micro movements of the retainer during the measuring or metering operation, thus providing consistently low, dynamic frictional torque.
Ball bearing with optimized friction properties.
Using a new manufacturing procedure, GRW’s patented, precision ball bearing retainers are made with a combination of materials optimized to consistently provide strength and low friction over the life cycle of the bearing. This new process and the GRW ball bearing retainer properties render dramatic improvements over conventionally available ball bearings to specifically address the technological demands of gas meters and anemometers.
GRW testing proves longer life, even with inadequate lubrication.
No matter how adverse the circumstances of the application, GRW’s special ball bearing retains its low friction properties, even in lubricant deprived situations.
GRW ball bearings have been proven to run reliably even in cases of oil and grease lube starved situations. In dry running tests GRW has demonstrated that lifetime lubrication can be ensured, up to a maximum speed factor of 80,000 mm/min (N.Dm). The special ball bearing retains its low friction properties, despite a lubricant deprived environment. This prevents metal-to-metal contact even after the loss of the minimum hydrodynamic film.
With this newly patented ball-bearing retainer, GRW now offers dramatic improvements when compared to previously used conventional ball bearings which cannot meet the low torque properties required for gas meters and anemometers.
GRW Ball Bearings: Manufacturers’ strategic choice for extreme conditions and demands.
GRW High Precision Bearings has expanded its customer base of gas flow meter and anemometer OEMs. This is a direct result of GRW’s precision manufacturing, and life improvements. Along with gas flow meters and anemometers, GRW high-precision ball bearings are used in a variety of precision applications i.e. electric motors, precision measurement and control devices, medical and dental equipment, including vacuum and aerospace applications.
