Devices such as anemometers have long presented the greatest challenges to ball bearing technology. High friction, torque and lubrication take a heavy toll on the service life of ball bearings. Not only must bearings stand up to periods of peak performance but must offer extremely low startup torque so that accuracy of measurement is maintained, especially in the case of minimal media flow. Furthermore, micro-movements can cause randomly measured value extremes that distort the findings and preclude an exact determination of the flow rate. As a result, a ball bearing used in these devices must exhibit consistent dynamic behavior as it slows down once the media has stopped flowing or the wind has subsided.
GRW’s patented specialty ball bearings meet these extreme requirements for anemometers, including the reproducible starting torque, minimal dynamic frictional torque and long-term stability. GRW ball bearings have been proven to run reliably even in cases of oil and grease lube starved situations. In dry running tests GRW has demonstrated that lifetime lubrication can be ensured, up to a maximum speed factor of 80,000 mm/min (N.Dm). The special ball bearing retains its low friction properties, despite a lubricant deprived environment. This prevents metal-to-metal contact even after the loss of the minimum hydrodynamic film.
With this newly patented ball-bearing retainer, GRW now offers dramatic improvements when compared to previously used conventional ball bearings which cannot meet the low torque properties required for gas meters and anemometers.
